Description and Ethnobotany

Growth Form Woody climber.
Foliage Compound leaf is composed of 5 – 9 leaflets where terminal leaflet is elliptic to obovate (6 – 9 cm x 3 – 4.5 cm). Leaf texture is somewhat leathery with both sides either hairless or covered in short, stiff hairs. Young leaves are reddish.
Flowers Purple flowers are arranged in clusters known as pseudoracemes or pseudopanicles. The inflorescence stalk is attached above the point of leaf attachment along the stem.
Fruit Fruit is a flat, winged pod which is hairless (4 – 9.5 x 1.5 – 2.6 cm). Flattened seeds are disc- or bean-shaped (9 – 12 x 7 – 11 x 1 – 4 mm).
