Nymphaea 'Islamorada' is a tropical, day blooming water lily cultivar that bears purple flowers with white spots. Although it is a sterile hybrid, it produces an abundance of daughter plantlets.

Description and Ethnobotany

Growth Form Floating aquatic plant.
Foliage Olive green, oval leaf has a reddish purple underside with dark purple spots.
Flowers It produces large purple flowers with cream-coloured spots (10-15 cm wide).
Fruit As a hybrid cultivar, it typically does not produce fruit.
Taxonomy This cultivar was hybridised by Florida Aquatic Nurseries in 1998. They crossed a dark purple flower form of Nymphaea stellata with a white flower form of Nymphaea micrantha.
Cultivation It grows and flowers best under full sun, but can tolerate light shade. Position the pot about 15-30 cm below the surface of the water.
Etymology The cultivar is named after a village in Florida that is spread over 5 islands. Islamorada means 'purple island' in Spanish.
