Description and Ethnobotany

Growth Form It is a rhizomatous, herbaceous plant.
Foliage The leaves are variegated with green and white or off-white streaks and stripes.
Stems It has an underground rhizome (thick, horizontal modified stems) that produces variegated aboveground stems.
Flowers Variegated specimens rarely flower under local conditions.
Taxonomy This variegated cultivar has been previously identified as a variegated form of Costus amazonicus or Costus arabicus. However, these plants are indistinguishable when not in flower and do not readily flower under Singapore's conditions.
Cultivation It can be propagated by rhizomes and division.
