About Intertidal Watch

Intertidal Watch is a long-term citizen science initiative to document and monitor the biodiversity of Singapore's intertidal habitats.

Volunteers work alongside park managers to collect data on species found in intertidal habitats.

Why this matters

The data gathered facilitates science-based decision-making and management of Singapore’s coastal areas, to conserve these marine environments.

These surveys involve using scientific methods to monitor and assess the health of intertidal zones.

How to participate

Interested to participate in Intertidal Watch? Email intertidal_watch@nparks.gov.sg for more information.

Once you register, you will be trained in basic marine biodiversity identification and survey techniques to collect data about common intertidal species. More details will be provided in the email upon successful registration.

Species you might encounter

During Intertidal Watch, volunteers document a variety of marine life. Some species you might encounter include:

1. Knobbly Sea Star (Protoreaster nodosus)
2. Octopus (Octopus sp.)
3. Orange-striped Hermit Crab (Clibanarius infraspinatus)
4. Yelloweye Pufferfish (Arothron immaculatus)
5. Sea Apple Sea Cucumber (Pseudocolochirus violaceus)
6. Salmacis Sea Urchin (Salmacis sphaeroides)
7. Biscuit Sea Star (Goniodiscaster scaber)
8. Pink Warty Sea Cucumber (Cercodemas anceps)
9. Weasel Olive Snails (Oliva mustelina)
