Tropical Forest Ecology Research Grants and Fellowships Scheme

This is a small grants and short-term fellowship scheme to support early career researchers in tropical forest ecology research.

Tropical Forest Ecology Research (TFER) Grants and Fellowships Scheme (GFS) is a small grants and short-term fellowships scheme to support early career researchers in tropical forest ecology research.

The scheme has an annual grant call, where applicants can choose to apply for either or both components.

  • The small grants component provides funding for up to two years.
  • The short-term fellowship scheme offers a monthly stipend of SGD5,250, with a recommended duration of 3 months. The full fellowship duration must be spent in Singapore. Overseas applicants will receive SGD1,000 monthly accommodation allowance (pro-rated to fellowship duration). The fellowship is awarded directly to the successful applicant and so should not be included in computation of indirect research costs.

Across both components, the scheme provides funding of up to SGD100,000 per project.

While each grant call has specific call topics, proposals outside these topics are also welcome, provided they focus on tropical forest ecology research. However, proposals that fit within the call topics, as well as those that use or enhance the data collected from the permanent research plots under NParks’ Tropical Forest Ecology Research programme, will be favoured during evaluation.

The call topics for the 2026 Grant Call are listed below:

  1. Development and assessment of forest restoration strategies
  2. Forest disturbance ecology (including edge effects, blowdowns, fire, etc.)
  3. Climate change impacts on and sensitivity and resilience of forests and forest-associated biodiversity
  4. Impacts of invasive species and improving the cost-effectiveness of control methods
  5. Life history or genetics studies and occupancy / demographic  / movement modelling for flagship/indicator species in Singapore’s forests
  6. Forest dynamics modelling in Singapore’s forests
  7. Integrated botanical studies, e.g., coupling field observations of trees in plots with specimen-based work
  8. Plant pathogens in Singapore’s forests and implications for forest regeneration and climate resilience

Deadline

The inaugural grant call for the TFER GFS will be open for applications from 5 January 2026 to 13 March 2026, 2:00pm, Singapore time (UTC +8:00).

Completed applications must be submitted by 13 March 2026, 2:00pm, Singapore time (UTC +8:00). Incomplete (e.g., without required endorsements) or late applications will not be considered.

Who can apply

The TFER GFS is open to Lead Applicants who are Singapore citizens, Singapore permanent residents or citizens of ASEAN member countries. Lead Applicants must also be early career researchers, defined as either currently undertaking, or within 5 years of being conferred, a research-intensive postgraduate degree.

The small grants component is open to Lead Applicants affiliated with Singapore-based Institutes of Higher Learning (IHLs). For research staff working on a supervised project (e.g., post-doctoral fellows), current postgraduate students, or officially visiting students/staff, support by the supervisor/host faculty member will be required.

For the short-term fellowship component, the Lead Applicant need not be affiliated with Singapore-based IHLs; however, the entire fellowship duration must be spent in Singapore.
