What you can spot

Some examples of birds you can encounter include the:

• Greater Racket-tailed Drongo
  • Look for a bird with two long outer tail feathers with rackets at the tips. It is often perched on mid-canopy trees.
  • This intelligent bird is known for mimicking the calls of other birds. You might also spot it near the Long-tailed Macaques, as it follows them to catch insects disturbed by their movements.
• Asian Fairy Bluebird
  • Listen out for its enchanting call – a 2-note call resembling "glue-it."
  • This bird measures around 24-27cm in size.
• Red-crowned Barbet
  • Recognise this bird by its bright red cap extending from the bill to the nape. It has light blue markings on the chin and throat, while the rest of its body is a vibrant leaf-green. Look out for it feeding on fruits from trees and vines.
  • It is found mainly in the Bukit Timah and Central Catchment Nature Reserves, and is not common in the rest of Singapore.
• Emerald Dove
  • Scan the ground as this bird is often found foraging for fallen fruit. It enjoys seeds and fruits from various plants.
  • Its call is a low soft cooing, made up of about 6 or 7 coos starting quietly before rising. It also has a nasal "hoo-hoo-hoon" call.

These are just a few examples of the birds you might encounter during your birdwatching adventure. Keep your eyes and ears open, and remember to be respectful to give these animals the space they need.
