Description and Ethnobotany

Growth Form Large shrub up to 4.6 m tall.
Foliage Dark green, glossy leaves are elongated and elliptical. Young leaves have an undulate leaf margin which straightens out to become entire at maturity. The leaf texture is wrinkled with the leaf blade bulging between veins.
Flowers White, tubular flowers are arranged in small clusters near the stem tips. The floral tube is long and narrow and there are 5 linear lobes which droop down. There is 1 reddish pink stigma and 4 long, curled stamens which have white filaments that are purplish pink near the tip.
Fruit Each flower produces a single round seed pod which becomes shiny black at maturity. The seed pod is surrounded by bright red tissue which persists on the plant for several months.
Cultivation It grows best in full sun, but tolerates semi-shade at the expense of less flowering. Avoid heavy pruning because it encourages prolific suckering. It has moderate drought tolerance once established.
