| Foliage | Smooth, grey to bluish green leaves are approximately oval-shaped (3-11 cm long, 0.5-3 cm wide) with smooth, toothless leaf margins. Leaves are spirally arranged around the stem. |

| Flowers | The inflorescence is a compound flower (known as a capitulum) which is borne on a 9-50 cm tall flowering stalk. The capitulum resembles a thistle flower, being composed of bright red disc florets (no ray florets). Disk florets are tubular with triangular lobes (1.2-5 mm long). |
| Fruit | Dry, indehiscent, 1-seeded fruit is known as an achene. The achene is hairless, 3-4 mm long, and has a hairy appendage known as a pappus (initially 9-15 mm long, but elongating to 50 mm in the mature fruit). |
