Learn more about these landscapes dedicated to improving our mental health and well-being

A contemplative landscape improves our mental health by encouraging contemplation - a mental state characterised by reaching peace of mind and eliminating of distracting thoughts, while cultivating the positive approach towards life.

Designing contemplative landscapes

The Contemplative Landscape Model (CLM) comprises 7 key components:

1. Layers of the Landscape
2. Landform
3. Biodiversity
4. Colour and light
5. Compatibility
6. Archetypal elements (such as water features, paths, clearing, hills, single old tree, stone, forest)
7. Character of peace and silence

The figure below summarises and describes the details of each landscape component in the CLM, together with its scoring system from 1 to 6 points, where 6 represents the highest score for each component.

In city planning and design, it is important to not only create functional spaces but also spaces that improve the quality of life and well-being of city dwellers. Using the CLM to design green spaces is a helpful approach to create landscape scenery that promotes relaxation, mindfulness, and positive emotions, contributing to a mentally healthier city.
