About contemplative landscape

Learn more about these landscapes dedicated to improving our mental health and well-being

A contemplative landscape improves our mental health by encouraging contemplation - a mental state characterised by reaching peace of mind and eliminating of distracting thoughts, while cultivating the positive approach towards life.

Research behind contemplative landscapes

A study done together with the National University of Singapore showed that viewing contemplative landscapes can trigger mood improvements as well as positive brain activity patterns, reflective of a better state of mental well-being.

These landscapes are defined by the 7 key categories of the Contemplative Landscape Model (CLM), a tool used for identifying and designing landscape scenery that enhances the visual quality and experience for users, in turn helping to improve their well-being.

Based on the research findings from the study, we published the Design Guidelines for Contemplative Landscapes, to help guide landscape professionals in applying the CLM in designing landscapes that promote mental well-being.
