Research Interests

I am a botanist with a passion for tropical biodiversity, especially South-East Asia, with a research focus on the taxonomy and systematics of a range of various woody plants, the floristics of New Guinea and Borneo, and conveying plant diversity and identification techniques to a broad audience. I am primarily interested in the discovery and description of SE Asia’s plant diversity, and enhancing and curating the herbaria, specimens and data that underpin all fundamental biodiversity research. I am the Editor-in-Chief of Gardens’ Bulletin Singapore, Editor of Thai Forest Bulletin, and a member of the Flora Malesiana and Flora of Thailand Boards, as well as an international advisor for Sandakania.

Current Research

  1. Taxonomy and systematics of tropical Primulaceae (especially Maesa, Ardisia, Embelia).
  2. Taxonomy and systematics of climbing plants, including Convolvulaceae (Erycibe, Neuropeltis), Rhamnaceae and Icacinaceae.
  3. Revisionary work on Primulacae and Icacinaceae for Flora of Singapore.
  4. Floristics of New Guinea (Indonesia and Papua New Guinea).
