More than 8,000 people turned up for NParks' First SG50 Concert featuring local acts and SG Heart Map @ Park

13 Mar 2015
Singapore, 14 March 2015 – As part of the SG50 celebrations, the National Parks Board (NParks) held the first of its NParks Concert Series in the Park at Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park today at 6pm, at Grand Lawns I and II, drawing more than 8,000 people. Park visitors were enthralled by performances by local talents including Kit Chan, Olivia Ong, Jack & Rai, Matthew and the Mandarins and Suhaimi Yusof, as well as performances by Catholic High School, MacPherson Primary School and Bishan-North CC’s Singapore First Elvis Fan Club.

2 The concert was held in conjunction with SG Heart Map @ Park, the first celebration of the SG Heart Map initiative. The SG Heart Map seeks to weave memorable past places, meaningful new places and aspirations for future places into a collective map, through the shared stories of Singaporeans.

3 To mark the launch of this first celebration for the initiative, about 1,000 Singaporeans participated in the formation of a one-of-a-kind SG Heart Map, right in the heart of Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park. Led by Minister Grace Fu, who is the Co-Chair of the SG50 Environment and Infrastructure Committee overseeing the SG Heart
Map project, the formation included students and the community who had come to enjoy the various activities and create new shared experiences with each other.

4 The event also saw the unveiling of literary works authored by a team of 10 established local writers, led by Kenny Leck, co-founder of Books Actually. Inspired by the public contributions to SG Heart Map, the literary works, which relate to the theme of childhood, were showcased on giant inflatables lined around the park. Many members of the public were seen capturing photos of their fun moments with the installations. Some of the visitors, inspired by the works, also contributed their own childhood stories about places in Singapore at the SG Heart Map roving vans on-site.

5 Concert goers were treated to a sneak preview of acclaimed filmmaker Royston Tan’s short film – 50 First Kisses – for SG Heart Map. Set against the backdrop of iconic landmarks in Singapore, 50 First Kisses features stories of Singaporeans from all walks of life. It demonstrates enduring relationships among families and friends which withstand the test of time. Visitors lauded the film, which brought them on a journey through time and reminded them both of sentimental moments in their relationships, and the amazing transformation of the physical landscape in Singapore.

6 Other fringe activities at the concert included an eye-catching kite display as part of the SG Heart Map Kite Festival, and a carnival with food and game stalls. Members of the public who shared their personal stories at the SG Heart Map contribution booths, also received a specially designed SG Heart Map picnic mat. This limited edition gift came in handy for those picnicking in the park.
