One of the native forest trees of Singapore, this species is usually found in freshwater peat-swamp forest. Its wood is highly sought after, providing useful timber for construction.
According to the Singapore Red Data Book (second edition), it is considered to be an endangered species.
This Heritage Tree is one of the biggest specimens in the Singapore Botanic Gardens, and can also be viewed up-close by the public.
